• After visiting the terminals of the Valencian docks, the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility – who was accompanied by the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, the Mayor of València, María José Catalá, the Government Delegate in the Region, Pilar Bernabé, the President of Puertos del Estado, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, and the President of the Port Authority of València (PAV), Mar Chao – made a speech in which he confirmed the approval of the tender for the project

 The new north terminal of the Port of València is about to become a reality.  The next Council of Ministers will give the green light to the construction project of the new terminal located in the northern extension of the Port of València – built in 2012. This was announced by Oscar Puente, Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, after his visit this morning to the Valencian docks.

“Next Tuesday, in the Council of Ministers, we will approve the tender for the works of the new north terminal”, said Puente in his speech at the traditional Valenciaport Christmas party, which is attended by the entire port community. “We could not wait any longer, so the reason I am here today is to bring good news for the professionals in the sector who have been waiting for this decision for so long”.

The approval of the project for the construction of the new terminal in the next Council of Ministers was made by Oscar Puente after visiting the terminals of the Valencian docks where he said that “I have seen what I expected: the first port in Spain, the fourth in the European Union, the first in the Mediterranean and number 20 in the world, a truly important port”.

The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility was accompanied both on the visit and the Christmas drink afterwards by the President of the Port Authority of València, Mar Chao, the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, the Mayoress of Valencia, María José Catalá, the Government Delegate in the Comunitat, Pilar Bernabé, and the President of Puertos del Estado, Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena. Mar Chao, who welcomed the port community to the event, welcomed the announcement and thanked them for their work.

A Zero Emissions Terminal

The new container terminal of the Port of València will be an infrastructure that will combine technology, eco-efficiency, intermodality and sustainability to offer an optimum service to the Spanish economy and maintain the inter-oceanic character that guarantees connectivity with the markets of the five continents. Furthermore, it will be an infrastructure that will generate employment and boost the economic activity of its hinterland and will reinforce the status of the Spanish ports as a European benchmark in the Mediterranean arc.

This infrastructure, which will be located in the sheltered waters of the northern extension whose works were completed in 2012, will have a surface area of some 137 hectares and 1,970 metres of berthing line, with a capacity to hold five million containers.  The terminal will have state-of-the-art design, technology and equipment, with a fully electrified facility, enabling it to handle the large container ships in service, with high performance in both maritime and land operations.

In environmental terms, the new container terminal will be self-sufficient in terms of energy, in line with Valenciaport’s goal of a zero emissions port by 2030. A smoke-free space, as it will minimise CO2 emissions by supplying electricity to cranes and yard machinery, and to container ships that will connect their engines to the electricity grid during their stay in Valencia. 98% of the Terminal’s machinery will be electric and 2% hydrogen, while the origin of the electricity will be 100% from renewable sources. The environmental management system will be at the highest level (EMAS certification).

In this line, automation, the use of advanced traffic prediction systems, the design of the buildings with energy efficiency criteria, and the external lighting system with LED type luminaires will minimise energy consumption. The terminal envisages a railway terminal with six 1,000-metre-long tracks, with a capacity to move 305,000 TEUs/year by rail. A total public-private investment of 1,574,368 euros – 31% will be financed by the APV and the remaining 69% by TIL/MSC -.
