Cyprus Marine Club get together and presentation from Sunil Kapoor “Shipping with sharks and my life navigating through the dangerous waters”


On Tuesday, 28th November  2023, the Cyprus Marine Club hosted the Get Together with a speech and presentation from Mr. Sunil Kapoor.

Mr. Kapoor has been a member of the Cyprus Marine Club and Vice President since 2022.

He is also a board member of the Board of Governors of Cyprus Maritime Academy affiliated with the University of Nicosia.

Mr. Kapoor has an engineering background with a degree in Marine Engineering from DMET (1977 – 1981), Calcutta, a leading university in India.

Mr. Kapoor started his career ashore in 1993 to work with Lloyds Register as a Surveyor based in India for about three years and in 1996, Mr. Kapoor joined Fleet Management Limited in Hong Kong as a Technical Superintendent.

Mr. Kapoor relocated to Cyprus in 2007 to set up the Fleet Management in Cyprus, where he was serving as the Director of the Company’s Cyprus operations. During his tenure with Fleet Management Limited, Mr. Kapoor has been actively involved in all aspects of Technical Management and building supervision. He retired from FML Ship Management on 30th Sept 2023, after 16 years.

In a captivating presentation, Mr. Sunil Kapoor submerged the audience in the gripping analogy of modern-day shipping resembling swimming with sharks — a realm rife with uncertainty and concealed dangers. With a seamless fusion of personal narratives from both sea and shore, Mr. Kapoor vividly portrayed the rugged nature of the shipping business, underscoring that it demands courage and fortitude.

Mr. Kapoor’s distinctive style seamlessly intertwined storytelling with pragmatic insights, presenting strategies for conquering the challenges in the shipping world.

His engaging delivery not only left the audience with a smile but also bestowed a fresh perspective on the intricacies of the industry. Attendees departed not only enlightened about the nuances of the shipping business but also inspired by the resilience and determination requisite to navigate these unpredictable waters successfully.

It was an entertaining session, Mr. Kapoor’s presentation stood as a masterclass in resilience and strategic thinking for those navigating the seas of modern shipping.

The reception was attended by around 100  guests. The President of Cyprus Marine Club, Capt. Koch  welcomed 14 New Members (6 Corporate and 8  Individual) the Club gained since the Maritime Cyprus 2023 in October. The Club now counts 181 members.

Capt. Koch further reminded to register for our Gala Dinner on January 12th and he thanked the Gala Sponsors Maritime Bureau of Shipping and UMAR WSR Group for their contribution to this special event.

He further announced the Club’s events planned for January, April and May 2024.
