Three Major Airports Served Record High of Nearly 12.9 Million Air Travelers in May

Traffic at Bridges and Tunnels Equaled Pre-Pandemic Levels

PATH Commuter Railroad Usage at 63 Percent of Pre-Pandemic Levels — 59 Percent of Pre-Pandemic Average Weekday and 91 Percent of Pre-Pandemic Average Weekend Ridership

Port of New York and New Jersey is Nation’s Second-Busiest Container Port Year to Date

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey today announced its facility volumes at the agency’s regional airports, bridges and tunnels, PATH commuter rail and seaport for the month of May 2023.

The latest facility operating volumes for May 2023 are detailed below. More passengers went through the agency’s three major airports in May 2023 than in any May in its history at nearly 12.9 million total passengers. Traffic levels at the bridges and tunnels in May 2023 remained similar to pre-pandemic levels in May 2019. The PATH commuter railroad reached 63 percent of its pre-pandemic May 2019 total ridership. The seaport moved more than 5 percent more cargo in May 2023 compared to pre-pandemic May 2019.

The Port Authority also has included monthly data comparisons below of May 2023 to April 2023 to provide further insight into facility trends. Volume at the airports increased by 6 percent, traffic at the bridges and tunnels remained essentially flat, and average weekday PATH ridership in May 2023 increased by nearly 4 percent over April 2023. Compared to the month prior, the seaport moved 4.3 percent more cargo in May 2023.

Airports:

In May 2023, the three major airports served a total of nearly 12.9 million passengers. Year to date, the passenger volumes at the airports have already exceeded the same period in pre-pandemic 2019.

Tunnels, Bridges and Terminals:

At the agency’s six vehicular crossings, traffic volume was consistent in May 2023 with pre-pandemic levels for the same month in 2019 as well as with traffic levels in April 2023.  In May 2023, more than 10.7 million eastbound vehicles used the crossings.

PATH:

In May 2023, the PATH commuter railroad reported an average weekday ridership of 171,364 passengers and a total of nearly 4.6 million riders, the highest of both metrics since before the pandemic. The May average weekday ridership metric represented an increase of 6 percent over the April 2023 average weekday ridership.

PATH’s total monthly ridership in May accounted for about 63 percent of the same metric in May 2019.

Port of New York and New Jersey:

The seaport moved 676,311 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in May 2023, which was 5.1 percent more cargo in May 2023 compared to pre-pandemic May 2019.

The port was the country’s second-busiest based on loaded imports with a total of nearly 1.6 million TEUs handled so far in 2023.
