Sapura Energy Berhad is playing its part in developing a skilled Malaysian workforce through the ongoing expansion of its Technical and Vocational Education and Training  initiative.

Today, the Group signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Government of Malaysia, reinforcing a strategic alliance beneficial to the nation’s human capital growth.

“Our aim is to help the country lessen its dependency on foreign labour, while ensuring competitive remuneration for our Malaysians workers. We are willing to extend our TVET initiative beyond our current training centre in the Lumut fabrication yard”, said Sapura Energy Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib. “As one of the biggest employers in the oil and gas services sector, we are committed to provide training and work opportunities for Malaysian skilled and semi-skilled workforce. This commitment continues despite our financial constraints and operating challenges.”

Looking ahead, Sapura Energy is committing to invest RM1.4 million over the next three years to further advance its TVET initiative, intending to foster the continuous development of local talent in the oil and gas industry. The initiative aims to benefit approximately 1,100 students.

Since launching its TVET programme in 2019, Sapura Energy has provided essential training to approximately 320 students at its Sapura Fabrication Training Centre (SFTC) in Lumut, instilling essential skills and industry knowledge. Today, more than 3,000Malaysians proudly serve as craft and crew members at its fabrication yards, vessels, and drilling rigs, both in Malaysia and internationally.

Chief People Officer Puan Puspa Hanita Abd Aziz said, “We focus on providing a rich on-the-job training experience and practical opportunities to our STFC trainees, enabling them to meet the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) Level 2 and 3 certification and our industry requirements. We aim to employ almost all our trainees, depending on the number of projects that we secure.”

Sapura Energy’s craft and crew are given room for progression, with some team members starting out as helpers and eventually moving up through the ranks to become supervisors.

“We have seen many TVET graduates building a successful career in Sapura Energy,” Puspa added. “Many have notched wide international experience based on their technical skills.”

In a recent collaboration with the Department of Skills Development, the SFTC has facilitated a six-month training programme, resulting in the certification of 79 craft workers under the National Dual Training System Assessment, or Skim Latihan Dual Nasional. These were school-leavers who had no opportunity to further their studies at tertiary level, and joined Sapura Energy without prior training and certification.
