The first phase of HHLA TK Estonia’s new solar power park in the Port of Muuga has been installed on top of two warehouses and put into operation. On sunny days, its energy production fully covers the electricity consumption of two warehouses’ cooling and ventilation equipment as well as the consumption of a nearby workshop and an office. Additionally the surplus green energy is delivered to the power grid of the port. The expansion of the plant is already planned.

Riia Sillave, CEO of HHLA TK Estonia: “With the completed solar installation, we aim to generate up to more than half of our total electricity consumption ourselves in a sustainable way. Combining the daytime loading operations of our dual power hydrocrane with the solar power, we are operating already CO₂neutral in peak hours.”

The project manager Arvi Lugenberg explained the technical details: “The first two working solar parks have a total capacity of around 240-kilowatt peak (kWp; describes the performance of a module under specified conditions), generating an average of 720 kWh per day. In May, the modules produced 46,000 kWh, which helped to cover 50% of the consumption of the general cargo terminal.” The expected total production of the facility – based on multi-year average sunlight data – is 240.000 kWh annually.

New 100 kWp photovoltaik park in 2024, next steps in planning

HHLA TK Estonia has started preparations to install two additional power parks on the roofs of other warehouses. This will increase the terminal’s production of green energy by more than 2.5 times. The 100 kWp power park will supply the main office building and container maintenance & repair workshop with electricty. Another 400 kWp plant shall support the project “Container yard electrification” with green energy. The combined estimated annual electricity production of the completed solar plant will be an estimated 640 MWh in the future. “With this project, HHLA TK Estonia is contributing to the HHLA Group’s goal of being climate neutral by 2040”, Riia Sillave said.
