Valencians get involved in the cultural activities of the Port of Valencia

  • The open day held yesterday – in which more than 800 people participated – has put the finishing touch to the two exhibitions that the Clock Building has hosted in recent weeks: ‘El Port de València al Segle d’Or. Commercial prosperity and cultural splendour” and ‘For an efficient, renewable, inclusive and sustainable present’.
  • The free visit to the Port of Valencia, which exceeded all the attendance forecasts, took place by ‘tourist bus’ between 10.00 and 18.00 hours on Sunday 11 June and the ‘full house’ sign was hung on the eight trips made.
  • The visitors toured the docks of the Valencian site and were able to see different areas and services as well as buildings, machinery and sustainable projects such as the hydropower plant and the railway.
  • The free guided tours of the Port of Valencia form part of the cultural catalogue of Valenciaport. School and university groups come every week, and on Saturdays it is possible to book a place for the bus tour.

The Valencians have shown that they love their Port. The cultural initiatives promoted by the Port Authority of Valencia to bring the port-logistic activity closer to the Valencians are a resounding success in terms of attendance. In total, more than 15,000 citizens have taken part in the last three proposals of the Port of Valencia: Open Doors Day and tourist bus tour with 800 attendees; Exhibition ‘El Port de València al Segle d’Or. Prosperitat comercial i esplendor cultural” – with 11,341 visitors -; and ‘Por un presente eficiente, renovable, inclusivo y sostenido’ – with 3,231 people interested in the proposal.

And these are only the figures of the last three proposals of the city-port strategy of Valenciaport with which it brings the port-logistic activity closer to the neighbours, citizens and tourists. They show that the Valencian people are getting involved in the cultural activities of the Port of Valencia and that this area of the city is very much present in the daily life of residents and tourists.

Thus, yesterday, Sunday – coinciding with the end of the exhibitions – the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) invited more than 800 Valencians and visitors to embark on a unique tour of its docks. Specially set up for this occasion, the experience explained and brought the activities and infrastructures of the main European container port in the Mediterranean closer to the local residents.

Families, groups of friends, tourists, retired people and, in short, groups of all ages, joined in the free tour of the Valencian docks. At the end of the visit, they all agreed on how “successful, complete and marvellous” they found it. “We never imagined that the Port was so big, nor all that is done in it”; “This experience must be repeated, we want to come back”; “We loved the tour, being able to stop and take photos and the explanations. Bravo!”, were some of the most repeated comments.

During the tour, details were given of the different activities that take place inside the site, such as the loading and unloading of containers, storage and logistics, and the rafts used for the cultivation of clòtxina. In addition, the visitors learned about some of the modernisation and sustainability projects underway, such as the inland railway network and the train tracks that reach the terminals, the dimensions of the cranes, the high performance of the docks prepared to accommodate all types and sizes of vessels. Just yesterday, in addition to the usual container ships, bulk carriers and ferries, a modern cruise ship and a French aircraft carrier were calling.

Guided tours of the docks of the Valencian precinct are a regular activity for groups of school and university students who can take these free ad hoc tours throughout the year, which are closed through the website: https://www.valenciaport.com/comunidad/actividades/. It can also be done by any local resident, as these visits are open on Saturdays to those who have booked a place on the website.

This proposal is an excellent opportunity for residents and visitors to Cap i Casal to learn about the activity and infrastructures of the Port of Valencia, and to understand the importance of international maritime trade and the economic impact that the port community brings to the city and its area of influence.
