It is finally time to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Gothenburg in the Gothenburg Freeport area! The city and the port have grown together symbiotically throughout history. The port has played an integral part in the city’s 400 year history, and continues to do so today. The port also plays a significant role as the city kicks off its 400th anniversary in the city’s Freeport area

The port’s participation will consist of several different components in a dedicated area in the Freeport, where they will offer a mix of port history, port innovations, and examples of sustainable port operations and in the future in a lighthearted and fun way.

“The port has a fantastic history and is crucial for the city and for Scandinavian industry—and this significance only grows as the port continues to evolve. The port is something Gothenburg residents have every reason to be proud of, and it’s a feeling we hope visitors will take away from our anniversary celebration,” says Rebecka Berglund, Event Manager at the Gothenburg Port Authority.

The Port of Gothenburg area at the celebration be offering something for everyone, regardless of age, whether they are maritime enthusiasts, history buffs, or simply craving an ice cream boat.

One of the main attractions will be the vessel M/S Trubaduren, which will serve as the centerpiece of the port’s celebration. With a tour of the aboard aboard M/S Trubaduren, visitors will experience a unique journey through Gothenburg’s history on the water. For those interested in taking the M/S Trubaduren tour, there will be a boarding point near the port’s area. The tour lasts for one hour and departs from Saturday to Monday. Tickets can be obtained from the Port of Gothenburg booth area.

On the land side, the port’s area will consist of three containers with different themes. In the first container, visitors will learn about the Port of Gothenburg’s history throughout the years, from the Swedish East India Company and the wave of emigration to famous personalities who have passed through the port over the years.

The second container will focus on showcasing the port’s role in today’s society as Scandinavia’s largest cargo hub and the world’s most sustainable port. The third container will be exclusively oriented towards, with face painting and other fun activities. In Gothenburg, we had our own pirate, “Lasse i Gatan”, but above all, sailing routes from Gothenburg have passed through pirate waters throughout history, from the Horn of Africa and the Caribbean to the Strait of Malacca.

In addition to the different containers, there will also be a lounge area in the middle of the port’s area where visitors can enjoy ice cream and relax in sun loungers under umbrellas.
