Cyprus Shipping News is delighted to announce the speakers of the 1st CSN Greece Marine Insurance Conference “The Financial, Legal and Commercial challenges of a 3 year cycl(on)e”.
Ilias Tsakiris is Chief Executive Officer of Hellenic Hull Management Ltd. He has almost 30 years of professional experience in the marine insurance sector. Mr Tsakiris was trained as a Master Mariner at the Hydra Merchant Marine Academy, Europe’s oldest marine academy, and he holds a degree in Maritime Studies from Liverpool John Moores University.
He started his career as an apprentice Deck Officer, where he moved up the ranks, then went ashore to work in London as an average adjuster and in 1995 he joined Hellenic Hull Management, the managers of a predecessor insurer Hellenic Hull Mutual Association Plc, currently the American Club Europe. Since 2005, he has been CEO of Hellenic Hull Management.
Notable achievements include overseeing dynamic growth for HMA, an innovative mutual insurer. In 2015-2016, he launched American Hellenic Hull, managed on behalf of the American P&I Club. He has been credited with negotiating the release of a vessel from pirates in Somalia in 2008 and safely steered HMA through a financial crisis in the aftermath of the collapse of the Mutual Association’s bankers in Cyprus in 2013.
Ilias Tsakiris has been elected as a Council Member of the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) and during IUMI’s annual meeting in September 2022, he was appointed Chairman of the Ocean Hull Committee, representing Cyprus, for a three-year period. It is the first time that an insurance executive from the Greek or Cypriot markets will lead IUMI’s Ocean Hull Committee and is another reflection of the prominence of the Greek and Cypriot shipping industries.
He is a visiting lecturer in various academic institutions and contributor in various international publications. He led the company to become member of United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEPFI) – Principles for Sustainable Insurance, UNEPFI – Sustainable Blue Economy Finance Initiative, Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative, Net Zero Insurance Alliance, Poseidon Principles for Marine Insurance, and UN Global Compact.
