From 2025, the new power-to-gas plant at Energiedienst’s Wyhlen hydropower plant will produce up to 720 metric tons of green hydrogen per year / Request for proposals starts on 17 April 2023

The largest production capacity for green hydrogen in southern Germany is currently being built on the German-Swiss border at the Wyhlen hydropower plant operated by EnBW subsidiary Energiedienst. From 2025, up to 720 metric tons of green hydrogen per year will be available to supply industrial and other customers in the border region of Germany, Switzerland and France. By requesting proposals for these quantities, EnBW is already taking a first step towards marketing hydrogen as an energy carrier of the future. In this way, the company is offering prospective customers the opportunity to secure capacity volumes for a sustainable and future-proof energy supply. The request for proposals starts on 17 April 2023.

EnBW subsidiary Energiedienst already operates an alkaline power-to-gas plant at Wyhlen with an electrolysis capacity of one megawatt. This has been producing green (carbon-free) hydrogen since 2019. The Whylen Real-world Lab project is set to increase the site’s capacity by an additional five megawatts with the construction of a new plant scheduled for completion by 2025.

This project, which is co-funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, is part of the EnBW Group’s activities directed at supplying customers not only with carbon-free electricity, but also carbon-free gaseous energy carriers. In pilot projects of this kind, Energiedienst and EnBW jointly develop new capabilities for hydrogen as a future area of focus and for the future production of affordable green hydrogen.

Hydrogen is one of the most important energy sources of the future. The development of a national hydrogen infrastructure is of great importance for the competitiveness of the German economy and central to achieving our climate targets. EnBW is systematically evaluating the potential and opportunities of hydrogen along the entire value chain, from production and trading to transport, storage and distribution. In this connection, EnBW has already launched numerous regional and local hydrogen projects to test the future of the hydrogen economy in practice and to actively shape the H₂ future for Baden-Württemberg.
