Greek Asso.subsea to install the export cable for the Ostwind 3 project which will provide climate-friendly electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of 260,000 German households

Asso.subsea, a specialized global contractor in the submarine cable industry, has been awarded by Hellenic Cables, one of the largest European cable manufacturers, of the transportation, installation and protection for the 220 kV export submarine cable system that will connect the Windanker offshore wind farm with the German extra-high voltage transmission grid.

The overall system shall consist of one export cable for a total length of more than 100 km to be installed along a submarine route characterized by numerous technical challenges, including shallow water areas, landfall pull-in through a 900 m long HDD conduit, boulder fields, numerous crossings and soil conditions varying from very soft to hard soils.

Asso.subsea will utilize almost the full capacity of its state-of-the-art fleet, including the DP2 cable laying vessel ‘Atalanti’, specialized in extremely shallow water working environments, and DP3 Cable laying vessel ‘Ariadne’ for deep water cable installation and platform pull-in. Additionally, the DP2 trenching support vessels ‘Argo’ and ‘Aethra’ will participate in the seabed preparation and post-lay burial operations. The latest versions of the trenching machines from the AssoTrencher V for cable burial in very shallow waters, AssoTrencher IV as well as the AssoJet III families, among the most powerful trenching/jetting ROVs in the market, will be mobilized in order to provide the required protection of the cables along the entire submarine route.

Mr. Alexandros Tziotakis, General Manager of Asso.subsea, commented: “We are delighted to partner with Hellenic Cables for the Ostwind 3 project and are extremely proud to be able to support 50Hertz in another fundamental step towards the energy transition.”

ASSO is particularly active in the Offshore Wind sector in Germany. The company has already successfully completed several projects such as Borwin 3, Dolwin 3, Veja Mate, Deutsche Bucht, Global Tech 1 and Kaskasi and is currently involved in the development of Gode Wind project.
