Hanwha Chairman Kim vows to grow DSME into a global company

In his New Year message to employees, Hanwha Group chairman Kim Seung-yeon called for efforts to grow Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) into a major global player.

The group has acquired the ailing shipbuilder, expanding its business portfolio into shipbuilding.

“Corporate activities and national security have become more closely related amidst rapidly changing international situations, such as the war in Ukraine and deepening conflict between the United States and China,” Kim said in a message to group employees on Jan. 2. “Our defense and energy businesses, which we have nurtured with a sense of responsibility for a long time, have become indispensable for the survival of our country.”

“We must continue to build these businesses and let’s grow DSME into a major global company that leads the development of local communities and the entire nation,” he added.

“We need to increase investment in R&D and innovation in our existing flagship businesses such as petrochemicals, finance, construction and services so that current success in those areas will not be short-lived,” Kim continued. “We will have to double efforts to produce positive tangible results that can meet the expectations of the market and customers.”
