MEPC 79: Belgium and Namibia join forces in green hydrogen production to hasten shipping Decarbonisation

At the joint event at the International Maritime Organisation, representatives from Belgium, Namibia and the Belgian shipping sector presented the green hydrogen project. The event was held on the occasion of the 79th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).
On behalf both countries, the Ambassador of Belgium, Bruno van der Pluijm and the High Commissioner of Namibia, Linda Scott, welcomed participants to the event. Presenting the project was Alexander Saverys, CEO of the Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), who showcased the immense progress the company has made so far towards achieving the energy transition that shipping so urgently needs in order to reach its decarbonisation goals.

Wilfried Lemmens, Managing Director of the Royal Belgian Shipowners’ Association (RBSA), gave the closing statement:
“The ultimate aim and goal of the IMO is very clear: zero emissions in 2050. We all have that responsibility towards the next generations. In order to reach this goal, all stakeholders will have to cooperate: shipowners, maritime equipment suppliers, governments and any other party involved. It is equally important that all countries are involved in this energy transition. I am more then ever convinced that we will have to join forces in the fight against climate change. What we have seen this evening is a fine example how this can work for the future. Together we can!”
