Multiple new-generation mixed reality (XR) devices are expected to debut next year. The examples include Apple’s headset, the mass production of which is expected to start in the first quarter. Those also include Sony’s PlayStation VR2, Meta launched the Meta Quest Pro last month, and Meta’s AR glasses and Google’s headsets are expected to debut in 2024.

With the XR device market forecast to grow, display manufacturers are also focusing on it. The importance of display is higher in XR than in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). This is because, in XR, the real world in a camera is required to be faithfully reproduced and high-pixel VR realization is required at the same time.

According to market research firms, the AR and VR display market is expected to grow from US$578 million to US$7.2 billion from 2021 to 2027. The CAGR estimate amounts to 51.8 percent.

At present, micro OLED and LED as display-semiconductor combinations are the two technologies drawing the most attention in the XR display industry. Those can be defined as LED and OLED deposition on silicon wafers instead of existing glass and plastic display substrates.

In order to achieve a high level of immersion in an XR device, the weight of its high-pixel and high-brightness display needs to be reduced. The micro display is very small yet allows fine processing and, as such, is suitable for that goal and suitable for glasses-type XR devices in particular.

South Korean display manufacturers are concentrating on micro display R&D in order to get the upper hand in the market about to grow rapidly. Samsung Display is developing both OLED and LED micro displays for use in XR devices. Its mass production and commercialization target years are 2024 and 2026, respectively.

LG Display is concentrating on OLED micro displays. The company recently realized a resolution of 3,500 ppi on a 0.42-inch OLED on silicon. Supply to Apple and Meta is anticipated next year.
