DNV is an independent assurance and risk management provider, operating in over 100 countries.
As shipping moves towards a greener and decarbonized future, wind propulsion is becoming an interesting option. DNV offers customers interested in using the power of the wind to reduce their emissions a range of tailor-made assurance and advisory services.

DNV is the world’s leading classification society and a recognized advisor for the maritime industry. We enhance safety, quality, energy efficiency and environmental performance of the global shipping industry – across all vessel types and offshore structures.

We invest heavily in research and development to find solutions, together with the industry, that address strategic, operational, or regulatory challenges.

With vast expertise and experience in sailing technology, DNV has used this synergy to develop a class notation for ships using wind assisted propulsion systems (WAPs). This is supported by a certification standard, ST-0511 “Wind assisted propulsion systems”.

In addition to a variety of technical certification and pre-certification services for wind propulsion systems, DNV is also able to guide customers through assessing the safety, commercial, and technical suitability of WAPs and which systems are right for their business.
