Cyprus Shipping Chamber: WORLD MARITIME DAY 2022 “New technologies for Greener Shipping”

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber joined the International Shipping Community, to celebrate on 29 September 2022, the “World Maritime Day”, which has been established by the International Maritime Organisation and celebrates maritime industry’s contribution to world prosperity. In addition, it highlights the significant progress made by the global Shipping Industry over the years, on matters regarding the safety and protection of the marine environment.

The “World Maritime Day” theme for 2022, is “New technologies for Greener Shipping”, reflecting the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future, while leaving no one behind. The theme focuses among others, on the importance of cooperation across and beyond the maritime industry, sharing knowledge, experiences and most importantly sharing a common vision on how we can safeguard a sustainable future for Shipping during its green transition.

The Chamber’s Monthly Members Meeting was held on the occasion of “World Maritime Day” with a presentation by Mr. Antonis Trakakis, Technical Director Marine of RINA Greece, on the “EU & IMO Fuel Transformation Regime – Hydrogen as Fuel Solution for meeting IMO 2050”. Mr. Trakakis presented a novel way of generating energy onboard, based on combining LNG with steam in a gas reformer to convert LNG molecules into hydrogen and CO2, to enable shipowners to comply with the IMO’s decarbonisation targets set for the Shipping Industry.
