LR issues summary report for the IMO Carriage of Cargoes and Containers Sub-Committee (CCC 8)


Applicability: designers, shipyards, shipowners, ships’ crews, ship managers and equipment manufacturers.

The IMO Carriage of Cargoes and Containers Sub-Committee is where all matters related to the carriage of packaged dangerous goods, solid bulk cargoes, bulk gas cargoes and containers are discussed. The Sub-Committee reviews or updates relevant codes including the IMSBC, IMDG, IGF and IGC Codes.

The Summary Report includes an executive summary for those requiring a general overview, and more technical information and explanations for those who would like more detail on the discussions that took place.

Key items include:

  • Finalisation of interim guidelines to address safety provisions for ships using LPG fuels. These follow the goal-based approach and are expected to be approved at MSC 107 in June 2023.
  • Further development of guidelines for the safety of ships using hydrogen as fuel. These address both liquefied and compressed hydrogen. Work is ongoing in a correspondence group.
  • Further consideration of guidelines for the safety of ships using ammonia as fuel. The guidelines will be developed to be read in conjunction with the IGF Code.
  • Development of amendments to the IGC Code continued, with further work expected at CCC 9.
  • Amendments to IGF Code were finalised and are expected to be sent to MSC 107 for approval.
