INLECOM coordinates new Horizon Europe project DT4GS

A new Research and Innovation action will contribute towards achieving 55% CO2 emissions’ reduction from waterborne transport by 2030, in line with the ultimate target of zero emissions by 2050.

Digital Twin 4Green Shipping (DT4GS) is a 36-months project, starting on the 1st of June 2022, aims at delivering an “Open Digital Twin Framework” for both shipping companies and the broader waterborne industry actors to tap into new opportunities made available through the use of Digital Twins (DT). The project will enable stakeholders in shipping to actively embrace the full spectrum of DT innovations to support smart green shipping in both the upgrade of existing ships, as well as the building of new vessels. DT4GS will cover the full ship lifecycle from planning to design, construction, operation, retrofitting and dismantling, by embracing federation of DT applications as well as utilising DTLF (Digital Transport & Logistics Forum) policies and related shared-dataspace developments for the sector. DT4GS applications will focus on shipping companies but will also provide an industry-wide decarbonisation decision-support system for shipyards, equipment manufacturers, port authorities and operators, river commissions, classification societies, energy companies and transport/corridor infrastructure companies.

DT4GS will create realistic digital representations of ships, which are then tested and validated in four Living Labs (LLs) with different types of ships (tankers, containers, bulk carrier and ROPAX) aiming at navigation/route, machinery and hull optimisation, through to energy management. Further improvements of the ships’/transport systems’ efficiency will be investigated via Just In Time (JIT) arrival implementation.

The project involves 21 partners covering maritime transport industry specialists and associations, shipping companies, shipping digital twin providers, Universities and research centres.
