Gasunie signs Memorandum of understanding with German partners on the construction of LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel

On Friday 4 March 2022 Gasunie ,and RWE signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the joint construction of an energy terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas  in Brunsbüttel.

Gasunie wants to start building the terminal this year, which, in addition to LNG, will also be made suitable for importing (green) hydrogen. With an annual capacity of 8 billion m3, the terminal creates the opportunity to bring natural gas onto the German market from regions that are not accessible by gas pipelines. Gasunie will also be the operator of the terminal.

Minister Kaag of Finance reacts positively: “With the construction of the LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel, Gasunie is making an important contribution to the European security of supply. A good step in reducing dependence on gas imports from Russia.”

Minister Habeck of the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate: “With the LNGterminal in Brunsbüttel , we are responding to the latest geopolitical developments. We must reduce dependence on Russian gas. LNG terminals help to increase security of supply in Germany and Europe. At the same time, we are preparing for the future by designing the terminal in such a way that green hydrogen or hydrogen derivatives (such as ammonia) can be imported at a later date.”
