In December 2021, NYK offered scholarships to 82 outstanding Chinese students at two maritime universities in China. This marked the 21st consecutive year for NYK to fund the education of students at these two universities.

On December 23, 2021, an online awards ceremony was held for 46 students offered NYK scholarships at Dalian Maritime University. Hiroyasu Takaizumi, NYK chief representative for China, and Xu Minqiang, deputy party secretary at DMU, participated in the online ceremony. Mr. Xu reviewed DMU’s cooperation with NYK and offered his sincere appreciation for NYK’s continuous 21-year devotion to maritime education, which fully reflects NYK’s strong ambition to remain a socially responsible corporate citizen.

Additionally, on December 24, 2021, an online awards ceremony was held for 36 students of Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) to recognize for their academic excellence and fine demeanor. They were encouraged to develop themselves into socially responsible and intelligent young adults having international visions. Those in attendance included Hiroyasu Takaizumi, and Shi Xin, vice president of SMU.

Mr. Shi expressed his appreciation and respect to NYK for its long-term support in educating and training new generations of the shipping industry.

Mr. Takaizumi voiced his respect to both universities for continually providing the students a safe study environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also praised the students for continuing their study in this challenging environment. He talked about NYK’s response to the pandemic and encouraged students to join the maritime industry and make the most of their experience and the special knowledge acquired at university after graduation.

NYK has continued this activity to fulfill the company’s social responsibility via educational social contribution activities and has now awarded dedicated scholarships to a total of 1,365* students at SMU and DMU. The NYK Group will continue to support maritime education to contribute to global trade and society.

On February 3, 2021, NYK released the NYK Group ESG Story,** which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy and promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through business activities. To strongly promote ESG management, NYK will continue to create new value as a sustainable solution provider through this educational social contribution activity.
