Our team at DP World Chile has secured the first renewable energy certification for a port operator in South America, a major milestone both for the facility, and our goals of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.

The certification — endorsed by Ernst and Young — was awarded by the Chilean energy firm Colbun, who concluded that DP World Chile uses 100% renewable electrical energy across its ports. The DP World team worked with the energy group ENEL for over a year, to obtain this certification, and had to showcase how 100% of the port’s electricity comes from the hydro-electric plants across the two terminals.

DP World is already at the forefront of renewable energy innovation, and this is a key pillar for our global vision. For example, in 2019 our London Gateway terminal moved to a 100% green-source Wof energy, to power its operations.

Other DP World ports and terminals in Chile are following close behind. For instance, 54% of the total energy used at our San Antonio port is hydro-electric energy, thereby renewable, and 30% of the total energy used at Lirquen is also hydro-electric energy.

Curtis Doiron, CEO, DP World Chile, explained: “We are proud of having received the first certification of this kind given to a Port Operator in Chile. This certification implies that we are not only reducing the carbon footprint in our operation, but that we are reducing the footprint on all import and export cargoes that use our terminals.”

He continues: “Optimising the electrical grid on the terminal is another way of reducing our carbon footprint. This certificate allows us to firmly move towards one of DP World’s worldwide objective, seeking to be carbon neutral by 2050. This important step has been very well received by our customers, particularly shipping lines and fruit exporters.”
