MOL PLUS to invest in Environmental Energy Startup Atomis

~ Creating new value, using new material—metal-organic frameworks ~

MOL PLUS announced that it will invest in Atomis Inc. & CEO, which develops new high-performance materials using Metal-Organic Frameworks .

Atomis’ vision statement is “We provide innovative global solutions for precisely controlling gases.” It has pioneered a unique synthesis method to manufacture high-quality, low-cost MOF, and aims to offer new value in various markets by expanding applications using MOF.

The investment by MOL PLUS will contribute to the growth of environment-related businesses such as CO2 separation and conversion and energy-related enterprises such as the next-generation high-pressure gas cylinder CubiTan®, which Atomis aims to implement in society. MOL PLUS also plans a proactive move to create a business alliance linking Atomis and the MOL Group. Along with this investment, Atomis and MOL Techno-Trade, Ltd. have agreed to pursue joint studies on the use of hydrogen in transport modes such as vessels, and applications of MOF in establishing a hydrogen supply chain for vessels.

MOL PLUS continually works to generate synergetic effects based on startups’ innovative ideas and technologies and the MOL Group’s resources through investment in and collaboration with startups, aiming to create new businesses that “PLUSnew value to the ocean shipping industry and society.”

<About Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF)>

MOF, also called porous coordination polymer (PCP), are materials covered with countless uniformly sized microscopic pores, giving 1 gram of the material on the surface area equivalent to a soccer pitch.

MOF can change the size of these holes and adjust the properties of the material through different combinations of metal ions and organic ligands, specifically, enabling them to absorb gas and low molecular weight compounds and add various functions such as separation, synthesis, catalyst, ion conduction, electrical conduction, and drug delivery.

Taking advantage of these characteristics, MOF can store substances with lighter-weight, lower-pressure than conventional materials, and can be applied to CO2 separation and conversion. That means it has enormous potential in contributing to a broad range of industries including environment- and energy-related fields.

What are porous coordination polymers (PCP)/MOF?

Porous coordination polymers (PCP) are also called organometallic structures (MOF), in which the metal and the organic compound have regularity and continuously form a three-dimensional structure, and the porosity controlled at the nano level is achieved.
