Hamburg Port Authority has commissioned Siemens to build the Port of Hamburg’s first shore-based power units for containerships. During initial trials, from 2023 these will supply green power to containerships during their lay time at the Burchardkai and Tollerort terminals.
Terminals will each be equipped on the quay wall with a consumption point from the public supply network, a transformer substation as well as the respective vessel connection systems. The shore-based power units will be constructed to the currently valid IEC/IEEE 80005-1 norm of 2019, supplying up to 7.5 MVA – megavolt amperes per containership supply point.
The Siemens order covers implementation planning, plus delivery, assembly, cabling and putting into service of all the units and construction elements required for operation of the shore power units, the necessary civil engineering, and commissioning of the entire system.The project is funded by the administrative agreement for the construction of shore power units that came into force in November 2020. This provided for the Federal government to make subsidies available until 2023 for the construction of shore-based power units in sea- and inland ports.
“By extending shore power supply to container shipping, we are taking a significant step towards decarbonizing the Port of Hamburg and thereby contributing to sustainably improving the city’s atmospheric quality,” says Jens Meier, CEO of HPA. Use of shore power by seagoing vessels during laytime in the Port of Hamburg is of immense importance, particularly in respect of NOx, or nitrogen oxide.
“We are delighted that following the successfully installed reference plant at the Altona Cruise Terminal, we are now also able to continue our cooperation at the big container terminals. In doing so, we are assisting Hamburg to meet the goals of its clean air plan,” says Stephan May, Head of Energy Distribution System for Siemens.Siemens had already planned and built the shore power facility for cruise ships in Altona already put into service by HPA in 2016.
