Naturgy delivered the first Carbon Neutral LNG cargo in Spain. This operation, a milestone for the country, reinforces the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) commitment set out in its Strategic Plan 2021-25.

The Castillo de Mérida arrived from Qatar and delivered the LNG to the Barcelona LNG Terminal.

Carbon-neutral LNG compensates for emissions by offsetting with carbon credits different phases of the value chain.  For this transaction, Naturgy has offset the carbon footprint of the LNG cargo from wellhead to discharge terminal.  The transaction is equivalent to removing 15,300 vehicles from urban traffic over a period of one year.

Currently, Naturgy continues to work with its global customers to offer carbon offsetting services, in order to continue carrying out this type of LNG deliveries in the Spanish energy system and worldwide.

Compliance with ESG commitments

With this operation, Naturgy has made a key step forward to support its ESG strategy, which has enabled the company to become highly qualified and valued in various international indexes analyzing the environmental and social commitment of companies.

The company has made a significant effort between 2017 and 2020, by reducing its direct CO₂ emissions by 30%. Specifically, last year the Group continued to reduce direct greenhouse gas emissions (-7%) and emissions-free installed capacity continued on the rise (+10%), representing 29% of total installed capacity in 2020.
