Marlink’s first Iridium® GMDSS systems ready for order and service

In 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) officially recognised Iridium as a provider of Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) satellite services, bringing an alternative to mariners sailing any of the world’s oceans including truly global coverage.

As a global launch partner of Iridium GMDSS, and following successful sea trials and development, Marlink is now pleased to confirm Iridium GMDSS full service readiness. From now on, Marlink will deliver equipment and provide connectivity services to Service Providers wishing to fit Iridium GMDSS on their customer’s vessels.

All Iridium Connected® GMDSS terminals will feature by default the following three satellite GMDSS services: Distress Alert, Safety Voice, and Maritime Safety Information (MSI).

For the first time ever, seafarers with the press of just one button, will be able to initiate both Distress Alert and Safety Voice simply and quickly.

Backed by Iridium’s unique LEO satellite network, Iridium GMDSS will provide voice and data services on top of GMDSS, around the entire globe including over the Arctic and Antarctic waters in Sea Area A4.

The LT-3100S from Lars Thrane, will be the first Iridium GMDSS equipment available for order from Marlink. The terminal will enable all three GMDSS services as well as voice and low-speed data services. On top, Marlink will provide its unique range of optimised digital solutions, such as SkyFile Mail for secure email & SMS.

Marlink have SIM cards and equipment in stock and Marlink Logistics is ready to take orders.

Please note the following important information

  • Current GMDSS requirements for Sea Area A4 still applies until the new SOLAS update take effect in 2024.
  • Additional GMDSS compliance rules may vary by flag-state and should be verified before installing the Iridium GMDSS equipment.
  • Iridium MSI service SafetyCast can only be relied upon during voyages where the METAREAs and the NAVAREAs are declared operational. Implementation status for Iridium MSI SafetyCast can be found on IHO.
  • Only a certified installer company approved by Lars Thrane can install the equipment. For certified installer you can look at the FAQ on Partnerlink or at DEALERS & DISTRIBUTORS – Lars Thrane A/S
