Groceries will be available for families affected by the economic challenges of COVID-19 during a food distribution event sponsored by the Port of Long Beach, Labor Community Services and the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

The drive-through food donation event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 27, at 1650 W. Ninth St. in West Long Beach. Early arrival is advised and no walk-ups will be permitted.

“Even with a decline in COVID-19 cases, a rise in vaccinations and businesses gradually reopening, there are still many families who continue to suffer the economic consequences of this pandemic,” said Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach. “We are grateful to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and Labor Community Services for joining us to address this vital issue of food insecurity in our community.”

“No family in Long Beach should go hungry during these difficult times,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission Vice President Steven Neal. “I am honored to work with our industry and community partners to help families put food on the table and gain access to nutritious meals.”

Each family served will receive up to 50 pounds of dairy products, fresh produce, frozen meat and shelf-stable food.

Due to health and safety protocols, participants are asked to wear face masks and stay in their vehicles as volunteers place the boxed groceries in car trunks and truck beds.

“The need for food assistance remains high as the economic impact of the virus continues to be felt,” said Michael Flood, President and CEO of the LA Regional Food Bank. “These distributions make a major difference for our neighbors in need, and we are grateful for partnerships like this that allow us to continue our critical work.”
