ABS Grants PDA to Irwin Rotational Lining Shenzhen (IRL)

After successful prototype testing of Irwin Rotational Lining Shenzhen’s (IRL) Polyethylene (PE) lined pipes, the design assessment phase of the ABS type approval process is complete, and a Product Design Assessment (PDA) certificate has been issued.

The ABS PDA recognizes IRL’s PE rotational lining (rotolining) of pipe and pressure vessels for fluid applications below 70°C. PE Rotolining is a process where, following surface preparation, the pipe is charged with an engineered PE powder and turned inside an oven in two axes so the PE melts and creates a uniform lining on the interior of the pipe.

“The ABS Type Approval program is a voluntary and efficient product approval solution suitable for qualified manufacturers who are targeting promotion of their products to the marine and offshore market sectors. ABS leads the industry in this area and I am delighted to be able to support IRL with practical applications of this technology,” said Matthew Mueller, ABS Business Development Director, Hong Kong Taiwan Region.

“PE lined steel pipes are becoming more popular due to their combination of strength, low friction, low cost and long-term performance in challenging corrosion environments, but different manufacturers vary in terms of quality and materials. By having ABS carefully examine our materials, procedures and products, it gives our customers more confidence they are purchasing a reputable product” said David Schaus, IRL Technical Director.

ABS PDA is an assessment of materials, components, products or systems for a specific use in compliance with ABS Rules, Guides and national or international standards. Based on PDA, the final approval is given when an Engineer or Surveyor accepts the assessed item for a specific user and installation.

The ABS Type Approval process is an optional program which provides design verification and manufacturing assessment that confirms products meet applicable industry standards and class requirements.
