Korean Register (KR) has launched a range of maritime cyber security e-learning courses in conjunction with Orange Security, a specialist cyber security consulting company, to support clients who may be having difficulty organizing group training because of the global pandemic.

As information and communication technology is widely applied to more and more of the maritime business world, so the risk of cyberattack for ships, shipping companies and ports grows. In addition, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolution of MSC.428(98) now states that cyber risks should be appropriately identified, analyzed, and addressed within the Safety Management System no later than the first annual verification of the Company’s Document of Compliance after 1st January 2021.

KR’s new maritime cyber security e-learning course is available in English or Korean. The content is divided into eight modules and explained in ways that can easily be applied at work.  The modules are: ‘Understanding of Maritime Cyber Security’, ‘Practice of Maritime Cyber Security’, ‘Administrative Security’, ‘Cyber Asset, Threat and Technical Security’, ‘Cyber Security Type Approval’, ‘Understanding of Maritime Cyber Security Risk Assessment’, ‘Cyber Security for Beginners’ and ‘Fundamentals of Cyber Security’.

Kae-myeong Park, general manager of KR’s cyber certification team which has led the development of the online course says: “As the shipping industry becomes more and more digitalized, so cyberattacks have increased. Comprehensive cyber security preparedness is now essential for any maritime organization. The global pandemic has made group face-to-face training very difficult, but this e-learning course allows seafarers at all levels to continue their training, to understand and take actions to manage cyber security risk.”

KR has long-established expertise in this area and has developed its cyber security technical and certification services in line with international security standards such as ISO 27001, IEC 62443, the NIST Framework, the IMO and BIMCO cyber security guidelines.

KR has provided cyber security technical and certification services for companies and ships since 2018, and cyber security type approval services for equipment or systems installed on ships in compliance with IEC 62443 4-2 and IEC 61162-460 standards, since 2019.
