AGR looks back at successful 2020 despite Global Challenges and gears up for 2021

First Offshore Carbon Sequestration Appraisal Well Delivered Offshore Australia; Advising the largest CCS Project in Norway; Bespoke iQx™ platform applied for Digital Well Delivery on All Continents
We have seen completion of successful projects in 2020 in both Australasia and Europe, despite the ongoing global challenges from COVID-19 and the industry downturn.
AGR CEO, Svein Sollund commented (pictured): ‘Amidst one of the most challenging years in the past decade, I am so incredibly proud as to how our staff have stepped up to continue providing the very highest quality well engineering, drilling project management and consultancy services to our clients. It’s a tribute to the professionalism and diligence of our teams around the world and provides us with the perfect platform to hit the ground running in 2021.’
In 2020, AGR delivered the first offshore carbon capture sequestration (CCS) appraisal well offshore Australia as part of a project to investigate the possibility of developing Australia’s first full scale CCS facility. Our multi-disciplined team with expertise in niche areas managed all aspects of the project ranging from Regulatory submissions, Contracting, Stakeholder Engagement and Engineering. The well was successfully appraised and abandoned using materials suitable for future CO2 storage at the site. Click in to the case study highlighting the assignment in more detail.
AGR’s reputation as technical adviser of choice for developing carbon capture, storage and use solutions was put in use when our Subsurface and G&G team advised the Norwegian government on developing possibly Europe’s first commercial carbon capture facility (more information on our offering within CCS with overview of some of the recent completed projects).
The iQx™ software, developed in-house by the Software business unit of AGR, also enjoyed expansion of its client portfolio to include users from every continent. The plug-and-play solution consists of separate applications that can be applied as ecosystem to empower collaboration and increase automation during the well delivery process. In the past year, the tool was applied for various types of drilling and well related projects covering exploration, production, well intervention and plugging work.
Other milestones for AGR in 2020 (among others) included:
- Decommissioning work on Ireland’s first indigenous gas wells;
- Multi well subsea completion and drilling project on behalf of a major UK North Sea operator as part of a multi-disciplinary, service led alliance;
- Consultancy work to increase recovery rates in mature fields in Northern Brazil;
- Support to DNV GL on a six-month research project into the potential of machine learning in the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS);
- Completion of numerous Competent Person’s Reports (CPR) for energy companies spanning the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS), Australia and South America; and
- A frame agreement with Vår Energi AS to supply temporary contract workers to support their extensive operations in the NCS.
Sollund continues, ‘I am very proud of our people who mobilised seamlessly to new working methods and delivered cost-efficient solutions to our clients’ challenges on time and with limited impact on the environment.’
