Volvo Penta’s vision is to become the world leader in sustainable power solutions. November 18th saw another milestone reached towards this objective – the introduction of a wide-ranging series of product and services exclusively aimed at delivering new benefits to the marine commercial market. These new products were introduced to customers, dealers, partners and the wider public at a live product reveal.

Among these new engines and services are a new D16 IMO Tier III package, as well as D8 and D13 solutions that meet EU Stage V marine emissions for Inland Waterways. This is part of Volvo Penta’s investment in sustainable solutions to significantly reduce emissions.

Upgraded D16 engines offer low emissions, increased power, and durability

As well as working on new technology that meet emissions standards, Volvo Penta is introducing an all-new D16 engine range. The new D16 engine now has new features & benefits and is available in packages for marine gensets as well as IMO Tier III compliance.

The upgraded six-cylinder D16 engine has increased power up to 850Hp for Heavy Duty operations and 750Hp for Continuous Duty operations. High torque at low revs provides easy, powerful maneuvering and rapid acceleration. The torque rise enables a high load capacity. On the economy and sustainability side, Volvo Penta has managed to combine this extra power and torque with improved fuel economy – savings depend on the chosen configuration and application. The upgraded D16 is a global engine. In addition to IMO III, it is also available in versions meeting US EPA Tier III and China 2 standards.

“Over 140,000 D16 units have already been produced for a wide range of applications within companies in the Volvo Group”, says Henrik Strid Design engineer at Volvo Penta. “In trucks as well as construction equipment. And many of them have been delivered to Volvo Penta customers. This vast experience has, of course, been a huge advantage in the development of this version – which has been reinforced, adapted and optimized for rough marine environments.”

Volvo Penta D13 Marine

More robust D13 range
That’s not all – Volvo Penta also announced that in June 2021 it will release a four engine D13 range with increased performance and durability, for lower cost of ownership. “The stronger base engine and tougher internals mean that they are more durable, earning them an increase in their individual ratings,” says Björn Rönnvall, Product Manager for 8-13-liter Marine engines at Volvo Penta. All engines in the family are also now Type approved.

Volvo Penta Easy Connect Marine Commercial

Staying connected
Finally, marine commercial customers can now gain access to Volvo Penta technology in one easy way – through its Easy Connect App. “The Easy Connect app is the next step forward for our aim to simplify our customers’ operations and business,” says Volvo Penta product expert, Maria Andreasson.

This sophisticated application offers increased capability for service & support and increased productivity. Easy Connect turns a smart device into a portable dashboard, with data that can be accessed from multiple devices through a cloud-based service – for use by operators, fleet owners, and the service dealer.

“The important thing for us,” says Chief Technology Officer, Peter Granqvist, “is to keep delivering and performing with the best of today’s propulsion and power solutions for all customer segments. Working closely with customers and partners, we are continually enhancing the offer to marine professionals, while at the same time continuing our journey towards greater sustainability.”
