DNV GL’s Smart Cable Guard reaches actively monitoring 2,000 cables milestone

Service is now available and operational on all continents

Today, DNV GL announces its Smart Cable Guard cable monitoring solution has passed the milestone of monitoring 2,000 medium-voltage power cables with this advanced technology that was launched in 2017. The company sees continuous growth in the number of cables added each week to its monitoring base and the system is now active on all continents of the world. Cables are being monitored from different control centers over the world to facilitate 24/7 operations and contact.

“These 2,000 systems monitor over 5,500 kilometres of all types and ages of medium-voltage power cables, often combined in one system. This is one of the unique features of Smart Cable Guard. After recently adding customers in North America and Australasia, I am proud to say that our technology has now been deployed on all continents. These are key milestones in helping our customers digitalize their grids in a bid to safeguard their networks and improve their performance.” says Prajeev Rasiah, Executive Vice President North Europe, Middle East & Africa at DNV GL – Energy.

Smart Cable Guard is a digital monitoring solution in which a ‘power cable’ is monitored by two sensors and consists of one or more medium-voltage power cable sections of different types, materials, lengths and ages. It is a unique sensor-based, machine-learning digital monitoring platform that gives owners and operators of medium-voltage cable networks 24/7 insight in the condition of their networks. Medium-voltage power cables and feeders are not only used by Distribution System/Network Operators, but also by owners and operators of offshore grids, railways and energy-intensive industries where disruptions in power supply or loss of production can have a high impact on business performance.
