Minesweeper ‘Kallisto’ towed to Salamina naval base

The Hellenic Navy minesweeper “Kallisto” was towed to Salamina naval base on Tuesday, following extensive damage sustained after its collision with the cargo freighter MAERSK LAUNCESTON outside the port of Piraeus, which caused the ship to take on water.

Two members of Kallisto’s 27-member crew were slightly injured and were sent to hospital as a precaution.

Sources said that the impact caused the stern of the ship to crumple and fold as it is made of Glass-fibre Reinforced Plastic (GRP) rather than metal, in order to minimise its magnetic signal. While tough and resilient, it is not as tough as steel.
