Solid waste shipments to China – important new law


New Revised People’s Republic of China (PRC) Law on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Wastes – effective 1 September 2020

A revision to the PRC Law on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Wastes becomes effective on 1 September 2020 from which date the carrier will be jointly and severally liable with the importer for the return and disposal of solid waste where the solid waste is prohibited and/or proper license has not been obtained. The law significantly increases the level of fines for violations.

From 1 January 2021 all solid wastes are prohibited from being imported to China.

Members trading in this region are encouraged to exercise caution and remain vigilant for any activity which may fall within the scope of these PRC Laws. For further information read the Steamship Mutual Circular L.358 and E.12 which can be viewed below.
