HELMEPA’s first online Workshop titled “Safety at Sea” was successfully held on July 2nd, with 140 participants from Greece and Cyprus.
Focusing on safety and accident prevention on small commercial and private boats, as well as fishing and sailing boats, the Workshop covered topics on personal behavior and responsibility, marine meteorology/weather “traps”, safety measures on sailing races and studies of actual incidents on fishing boats.
The response was very warm and there were many questions for the experienced Lecturers who represented Hellenic Lloyd’s, the Hellenic Bureau for Marine Casualties Investigation (HBMCI), the Hellenic Navy Seals Association, while issues of marine meteorology were covered by Dr. N. Mazarakis.
The Workshop is part of the 3-year (2019-2022) program “Enhancing the Understanding of New and Enduring Challenges in Maritime Safety in the Eastern Mediterranean” implemented by HELMEPA in collaboration with Associate Members Hellenic Lloyds and DYNAMARINe in Greece as well as the sister association CYMEPA in Cyprus, with the kind support of the British independent global charity Lloyd’s Register Foundation (LRF)*.
As part of the program, those interested can volunteer and become “Safety Ambassadors” by promoting strict adherence to relevant regulations and strengthening the spirit of Maritime Safety in the local community and the wider area in which they operate. This voluntary commitment concerns all those who love and respect the sea and wish to spread the message to the wider shipping community in Greece and Cyprus.
