South African navy hosts Russia, China for maritime exercise in and off CAPE TOWN: 25 – 30 November 2019


The SA Navy will host the Multinational Maritime Exercise.  This Exercise is the first of its kind between China, Russia and South Africa and is scheduled to take place off the southern coast of South Africa over the period 25 – 30 November 2019.  The exercise is primarily focused on maritime economic security, interoperability and maintaining the good relations between the participating navies.

The theme of the exercise is:  The promotion of Safe Navigation and Maritime Economic Security.  The following strategic and operational objectives have been identified for the exercise: • Development of Chinese, Russian and South African relations through the reinforcement of Multinational Exercises between the three Nations.

• Training of a Multinational Task Organisation to counter security threats at sea.

• Demonstration of a multinational willingness to ensure regional maritime peace, security and stability.

The Exercise will be conducted over 5 days with the first 3 days alongside and last two days with the execution of a sea programme.  The exercise phases entails the following:

• 25-27 Nov 19: Alongside phase will focus on finalisation of planning, finalisation of sea programmes as well as military social and cultural activities amongst others.

• 28-29 Nov 19: Sea phase will focus on Surface Gunnery Exercise, Helicopter Cross Deck Landings, Boarding Operations as well as Disaster Control Exercises.
