George Mouskas Member of the Executive Committee CYPRUS UNION OF SHIPOWNERS – speaks at Maritime Cyprus 2019

George Mouskas: The shipping industry is constantly trying to tackle the emissions problem to make a cleaner industry which is one of the cleanest industries already, but we need to do more and I think with the low sulphur regulation hopefully there will be enough compliant fuel to keep the ships moving next year. That’s a bit of grey area, but I am confident about the next generation of young people coming into shipping. They possibly will be more knowledgeable on certain matters such as the environment than the current generation. All the ships flying Cyprus flag are well equipped to be able to carry out what’s required for next year. Some owners have gone down the route of installing scrubbers, others would just comply by using low sulphur fuel. I think neither case the industry is ready for, but whether the oil companies are ready I really do not know.
