ONE Containership Clashes with Tanker in Piraeus Port

The 2016-built ultra large containership ONE Blue Jay was involved in an accident at Perama port in Piraeus, Greece on Thursday.

The incident occurred when the 14,000 teu boxship was sailing into the port, with 23 crew members onboard, and crashed into the starboard side of 1998-built 6,300 dwt chemical tanker Gunece, which was berthed at the port with 13 crew onboard.

According to local reports, the tanker was badly damaged and tilted to its right side after the collision. Two crew onboard the ship suffered injuries.

The port authority deployed up to six tugboats to prevent the tanker from sinking. Double floating dams have also been set up around the tanker for security reasons.

The port authority has temporarily banned the departure of both ships until investigations are completed.

ONE Blue Jay is operated by Japanese owner Ocean Network Express (ONE) and Gunece is owned by Turkish company Beykim Petrolculuk.

Latest AIS information show both ships are still moored at the port.
