The Mission to Seafarers, a leading international seafarer welfare charity, is announcing the Seafarers’ Awards Singapore 2022 is open for nominations. The annual ceremony recognises individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to improving the welfare of seafarers.
This year’s event will take place on 6th October 2022 and is the first in-person ceremony since the global pandemic caused the Seafarers’ Awards to take a two-year virtual hiatus. The prestigious awards will honour the commitment and contributions to seafarer wellbeing made by seafarers, shore staff and shipping companies around the globe.
Seafarer welfare and recognition are of vital importance. However, the Mission’s latest Seafarers Happiness Index report showed the lowest seafarer satisfaction scores to date. The industry must urgently tackle the perennial problems of shore leave and connectivity and provide extra support to manage the impact that unprecedented world events are having on seafarers’ wellbeing and mental health.
The awards ceremony and gala dinner will be hosted in Singapore, a key shipping hub which has now fully ‘re-opened’ for international travel, ending its quarantine requirement for vaccinated arrivals. This means plenty of networking opportunities for guests, including maritime’s key industry players. Expect food, drinks and music to accompany the awards, celebrating our in-person return after two very successful virtual events during the pandemic.
The award categories for outstanding contributions to seafarers’ welfare are:
- Seafarer’s Award – The seafarer who has made a significant contribution to welfare at sea
- Shore-based Award – The shore-based person who has made a significant contribution to seafarers’ welfare
- Innovation Award – For the company who has embraced a new programme, project or training which has enhanced seafarers’ welfare
- Cadet Award – for the Cadet or Trainee who has made a significant contribution to seafarers’ welfare at sea or ashore
- Secretary General Award – The person or company who has shown sustained efforts to improve seafarers’ welfare at sea or ashore
- Rescue Award – The person or company who has coordinated a successful rescue operation to save lives at sea
